DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Make a list of what you DON'T like about your current space.
  • Create a "wish list" for your new project, and then prioritize the items in order of importance.
  • Understand the styles you prefer.  Refer to photos and samples you may have collected.
  • Decide if this project is the beginning point for remodeling other rooms in your home.
  • If you plan on making big changes to your home, understand what functions or activities you want to plan for in this space, such as adding a fireplace, desk area, or adding a table instead of the current breakfast bar.
  • How will your family change over the next few years?  Will you become "empty nesters," or new parents?
  • Do you plan on selling your home in the near future or do you plan on residing there for awhile?
  • Do you do a lot of entertaining? If you do, consider the functionality and flow of your space.
  • Are there major structural changes to consider, such as moving a wall or window?
  • Establish a budget for the entire project that is realistic.  Discussing a budget beforehand will make the process easier for you and could save you money.
  • Decide what items (ie: cabinetry, flooring) you want to invest the most money into.
  • Decide what items, if necessary, you are willing to save money on.
  • Are there time constraints for the work?  If the project absolutely has to be finished by a certain date, please let us know right away so we can help you meet the deadline!
  • Make a list of qualities that you are looking for in your remodeling designer.
  • Are you working with an interior designer?
  • Do you plan on doing any of the work yourself?

FINALIZING YOUR PROJECT

To secure Sawhill Custom Kitchens & Design for your remodeling project, we will require an initial 50% deposit.  When a deposit is complete, all decisions should have been made, including designing and budget, enabling Sawhill Custom Kitchens & Design to prepare the final details of your project.

THE INSTALLATION QUICK TIPS

To ensure our quality standards are met, we prefer to install most of the products you purchase at Sawhill using one of our preferred vendors.  We are happy to make arrangements with your builder, architect, and/or designer to coordinate the installation if necessary.  If you are not currently working with a builder or remodeler, Sawhill can arrange for a builder or remodeler through one of our preferred suppliers.

To ensure flawless installation, we will meet the installer at your home to discuss the details of your plan and installation.  When construction begins, Sawhill Custom Kitchens & Design and our Contractors will:

  • Move your existing refrigerator to your temporary kitchen location.
  • Cover floors leading from the exterior doors to the remodeling area.
  • Cover floors in the remodeling area that are being saved or reused.
  • Move other existing appliances, cabinetry and countertops to the garage or other location.
  • Seal up doorways, heat registers and cold air returns to control dust.

REMODELING HELPFUL HINTS

To make construction in your home as unobtrusive as possible, we’ve put together some remodeling tips for you:

  • Determine a location that can be used as a temporary kitchen (if applicable), such as a laundry room, bar area or dining room.  In some cases, a temporary sink can be installed in your temporary kitchen space.
  • Clean out an area in the garage so it may be used as a staging area for materials delivered to the job site prior to their installation.
  • Remove all items from existing cabinetry.  Place items in boxes and mark the boxes with the contents. Remove boxes from the remodeling area.
  • Remove all items from the countertops.  You may want to retain some items for use during the remodeling such as: coffee makers, toasters, microwaves or toaster ovens. Take these items to your temporary kitchen.
  • Remove all items from walls in and around the remodeling area.
  • Cover furniture and floors in surrounding areas with sheets or plastic to protect them from the remodeling dust.
  • Remove area rugs in and around the remodeling area.
  • Discuss access and security to your home with your remodeling professionals.  Decide if they should use a lock box for house keys, or if your security system requires any special instructions for them.
  • Trade professionals will not normally answer your phone, but may at times need to use the phone. Please discuss any communications concerns with your remodeling team.
  • Decide where you want the trade professionals to park.
  • Decide if bathroom facilities will be available for your family and the trade professionals during the remodeling project, or if temporary facilities should be ordered.
  • Communicate to your neighbors that you will be remodeling and that there may be more noise and traffic in the neighborhood than usual.
  • If you live in a condominium or townhouse, please discuss the remodeling with the Association and your surrounding neighbors. Find out what the rules are concerning elevator usage and parking for the trade professionals.
  • For your protection and ours, please keep pets and children clear of the remodeling area
    at all times.
